The Assistant General Manager for Fitness and Membership plays a pivotal role in executing all fitness, wellness, and membership programs focused primarily on Stanford staff and faculty. Fitness programs include a robust group exercise, wellness, and personal training suite of activities as well as supervision of the fitness areas. The responsibility for membership programs include supporting the General Manager in member engagement, customer service, and business transactions.

In this role you will:

  • Recruit, hire, and supervise the Fitness Staff providing in-person and virtual fitness classes, personal training, and new member orientations.

  • Support the management of the Membership Services, providing leadership to part-time staff and directly interacting with participants.

  • Train staff in the use of Fusion recreation management software and additional membership desk operations.

  • Plan, organize and facilitate training, work assignments, evaluations, and if needed, disciplinary action for personnel.

  • Create and manage a suite of group exercise classes relevant to the membership.

  • Hire, schedule, and supervise multiple personal trainers

  • Model quality by regularly teaching classes and providing direct personal training.

  • Plan and implement programs to encourage membership engagement and wellness

  • Formulate innovative and creative methods of recruiting, retaining and serving members of the Stanford/SRWC community.

  • Manage correspondence and interactions with patrons using software tools and other customer based applications.

  • Collect and compile monthly, quarterly and annual operational and statistical data

  • Maintain employee handbook, policies, and risk management materials.

  • Review and approve bi-monthly payroll for contingent staff.

  • Compile and provide accurate information and updates to policies and procedures, improving overall customer satisfaction in the process.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Masters degree in the field of recreation, sports management, hospitality, business, or related field preferred.

  • Prior campus, university, or community recreation experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to teach multiple group fitness class types

  • Excellent customer service and a proven ability to meet performance standards.

  • Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.

  • Ability to coordinate daily activities including work scheduling, quality assurance, monitoring of activities, and supervision of personnel.

  • Knowledge of general event planning and ability to deliver a successful event.

  • Leadership traits including effective communication, supervisory skills, and the ability to manage workflow.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Current American Red Cross CPR, AED and First Aid or the ability to be certified within 30 days of hire required.

  • Nationally recognized personal training and/or group fitness certification
