Labs provides high-end custom research and learning design and development services to postsecondary education, K12, nonprofit, and corporate clients. Our team of researchers and data scientists engage in a broad range of research projects from implementation studies, quasi-experimental designs, randomized controlled trials, and sophisticated data science projects. Leveraging a team of expert learning experience designers, engineers, artists, and writers, Labs develops learning experiences leading to students’ educational attainment and life-long success.

Position Summary

The Business Development Director for WGU Labs will drive the growth of custom research and learning design and development service offerings. The successful candidate will focus their efforts on building a pipeline of prospective customers whose needs align with our capabilities and who share our commitment to educational and career outcomes.

In our drive to contribute to the betterment of education, we act as a nimble, resourceful, efficient start-up. This new role will lay the foundation for growing Labs through new client acquisition and continued relationship building. While the successful candidate will possess many of the classic business development skills—such as high energy, confidence, presentation skills, and closing skills—they will be an externally-visible representative of Labs. The director will report directly to the Executive Director, with regular interaction with other Labs leaders.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Build and nurture relationships with decision makers at prospective client organizations, and identify opportunities for Labs service engagements.

  • Consult with internal service teams to craft solutions meeting the clients’ vision, needs, and goals.

  • Communicate custom solutions through written proposals and statements of work.

  • Attend and network at conferences and events and support exhibits. 

  • Maintain an understanding of industry trends and current events, presenting opportunities and challenges to leadership. Inform Labs’s unique selling propositions and differentiators. 

  • Maintain accurate and timely records within a CRM.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities 

  • Proven track record across the sales lifecycle with an ability to acquire new clients as well as form lasting strategic partnerships. 

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills that build relationships, influence, manage conflicts, and navigate through ambiguity in order to get things done.

  • Strong writer able to clearly articulate service engagements through proposals and statements of work.

  • Ability to independently evaluate opportunities, calculate projections, and make recommendations on prioritizing efforts.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to make sound business decisions.

  • Strategic thinker with a track record in driving business development strategy, including the ability to identify and cultivate market opportunities.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 5-7 years of sales or marketing experience

  • Professional experience in business development, key account management, and/or relationship management, including proven consultative sales experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant advanced/graduate degree

  • Education industry experience 

  • 2 or more years in selling professional services or consulting services

Working Conditions 

SLC, UT located preferred, but will consider remote candidates

Up to 60% travel post COVID
