Title: Full Time Substance Abuse Counselor
Location: Richmond, CA
Schedule: M-F 6a-2p (1 hour paid lunch)

Primary Job Function:

Substance abuse counselor will be in charge with assisting patients through medically assisting treatments and offering techniques for handling opioid addiction. Counselor conducts individual sessions and group sessions to assist with crisis management and coping strategies. Counselor will evaluate patients’ progress during counseling and collaborate with doctors, nurses and other counselors to assist the patients’ achieving overall outcome.

Essential Job Functions:

  • 55% of each work day provide direct services to clients
  • Provide individual and group counseling services; direct service hours at regularly scheduled intervals; coordinate all services throughout treatment
  • ASAM placement assessment
  • Develop aftercare plans and discharge plans
  • Ensures accurate and current clinical records are maintained in accordance with Federal and State Regulations governing NTP clinics
  • Ensure efficient and effective delivery of counseling services to all patients
  • Other related duties as determined by supervisor

Qualifications | Education | Certifications:

  • Must be Certified or Registered for substance abuse counseling in the state of CA.
  • Previous experience working with chemically dependent individuals a plus. Must demonstrate a positive, non-judgmental, and accepting attitude toward our patient population
  • Minimum of an Associate’s degree in behavioral science and counseling/case management experience
  • Must exhibits excellent written and oral communication skills

Job Description

COUNSELOR

TITLE: Counselor

REPORTS TO: Counselor Supervisor or Treatment Center Director

POSITIONS INCLUDE: Certified and Licensed

FLSA: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY

Provide treatment and casework services to patient as directed by the supervisor in compliance with all

applicable laws and regulations and with BayMark’s policies and procedures. Provide timely

documentation of patient services based on plan of care. Identify other physical, psychological, social and

spiritual needs for assigned patients. Manage related expenditures in a fiscally responsible manner in

accordance with the company’s budget. Travel as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Minimum age requirement of 18.

2. Required/Maintained State Certification/Licensure or be in the process of obtaining

Certification/License.

3. Have experience working with opiate addicted population.

4. Must have or obtain current certification in CPR and First Aid.

5. Exhibits excellent written and oral communication skills.

6. Skilled in conducting assessments, utilization of ASI criteria for appropriate patient placement,

treatment plan development and implementation, service coordination, and crisis intervention.

7. Excellent documentation and computer skills required.

8. Knowledge of local community drug trends, the effects on the body and cognitive functioning of drugs

of abuse, signs and symptoms of narcotic overdose, psychosocial implications of addictive disease,

the process of addiction and treatment, social service, economic, legal, and medical systems, HIV

transmission-health, behavioral, and emotional implications of addiction.

9. Ability to work effectively within medical hierarchy, assist in complex problem solving with clients, and

work autonomously.

10. Exhibits good time management skills.

11. Ability to work with a diverse population and exhibit excellent customer service skills.

12. Knowledge of applicable State Code of Regulations and 42 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)

Section 8.12.

13. Compliance with accepted professional standards and practices.

14. Satisfactory references from employers and/or professional peers.

15. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting.

16. Satisfactory criminal background check.

17. Self-directed with ability to work with little supervision.

18. Demonstrate excellent observation, good judgment and communication skills. Ability to provide good

written documentation in a timely manner.

19. Flexible and cooperative in fulfilling all obligations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Prepare and maintain accurate and timely patient files.

2. Coordinate care of assigned patients and present patient status and concerns with treatment

team accordingly.

3. Conducts comprehensive patient assessments and the development and implementation of

patient treatment plans according to State OTP regulations.

COUNSELOR

4. Provide clinical services and patient care and education and opiate addiction counseling services

to patients receiving methadone maintenance and detoxification treatment.

5. Conduct individual counseling sessions.

6. Provide patient advocacy and liaison services with community and regulatory agencies as

needed. (CSAT, State Methadone Authority, Probation / Parole Office, courtesy dosing, housing,

food, etc.)

7. Monitor condition of patient to evaluate success of therapy, and adapt treatment as needed.

8. Assist in program evaluation efforts that describe and assess quality of services

9. Comply with any and all Federal and State regulatory standards as specified.

10. File body specimen test results (UA’s) in patient file and uses test results to monitor success of

treatment and as a tool for assessing eligibility of patient for take-home medications.

11. File various types of patient paperwork into chart.

12. Coordinates with medical professionals to facilitate annual justifications, approval for Step Levels/

Exceptions and dose adjustments for patient.

13. Submits timely requests for take homes as deemed appropriate.

14. Document patient progress notes and ensure that frequencies and counseling units are met.

15. Conduct patient intake and orients patient to program.

16. Compose interpretative summary, transition plan and discharge summary for each patient.

17. Ability to handle stressful situations and interact with others.

18. Must be present during working hours at the office for in person meetings and access to a

computer without violating company policy.

19. Provide crisis intervention, as needed.

20. Attend staff meetings.

21. Assist in program development activities.

22. Participate in counseling supervision sessions.

23. Support organizational and departmental philosophies, goals, and objectives and through own

behavior lead and motivate others to do so.

24. Communicate with counselor regarding pertinent patient information.

25. Regular attendance is to be maintained.

26. Adherence to a code of conduct conducive with BayMark Health Services policy is expected.

27. Meet or exceed delivery of Company Service Standards in a consistent fashion.

28. Interact with all staff in a positive and motivational fashion supporting the Company’s mission.
