Department Overview 

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance, operations, construction, restoration and emergency response.

  • Support the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution pipeline systems through the proactive use of asset knowledge, threat identification, knowledge of threat interaction, data integration and analytical tools to increase operational efficiency, improve system integrity and minimize safety risk to employees and the communities we operate in.

The Gas Asset Strategy team is responsible for identifying and scoping all work for Gas Operations. In addition, this team is responsible for exploring and implementing alternative ways to execute work, including downrates, retirements, and the use of alternative energy to reduce the overall risk of operating a gas system while meeting our customers' energy needs.

Position Summary

This Career Gas Engineer position will work with the Integrated Scoping engineering team responsible for scoping all work in gas operations including, but not limited to, replacements, strength tests, inline inspection, and direct assessment.  This team is critical to achieving two primary goals of Asset Management and System Operations: create a fully scoped and approved book of work in advance of construction and understand project bundling opportunities to explore alternative solutions.  This position is located within the Transmission Integrity Management Program (TIMP), which is responsible for maintaining and operating 6,700 miles of gas transmission pipelines throughout northern and central California. This engineer is required to work collaboratively with Integrity Management, Pipeline Engineering and Design, Project Management, Field Operations, and other stakeholders to ensure effective communication while scoping a comprehensive book of work for all gas assets. This position will work with the Regional Lead Engineer and report to the Supervising Gas Engineer of the Integrated Scoping team.

  • Must be willing to travel up to 30% within PG&E’s service territory

Job Responsibilities

  • Reviews, interprets, and validates the accuracy of risk data, project drawings, and as-builts
  • Creates project scopes that are focused on, but not limited to, replacements, stations, strength tests, direct/indirect assessments, and traditional/non-traditional inline inspection.
  • Creates comprehensive engineering scoping documents for execution teams that include, but is not limited to, scope of work, maps, diagrams, cost estimates, project constraints, and bundling opportunities
  • Supports the development and approval of short and long-term assessment strategy assets for local pipeline systems with asset owner and planning teams.
  • Works with engineering staff in Asset Knowledge Management and Integrity Management to ensure accuracy of information.
  • Collaborates with and provides presentations to Integrity Management, Pipeline Engineering and Design, Project Management, Field Operations, and other stakeholders to achieve a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Supports the development of processes or procedures of threats, assessment methods, or other scoping related areas.
  • Supports Gas Asset Strategy’s goal to build the energy network of the future by exploring and implementing alternative ways to execute work, including downrates, retirements and the use of alternative energy to increase safety by reducing the overall risk of operating a gas system while meeting compliance and our customers' energy needs.
  • Supports the team’s mission to scope the right work timely
  • Supports the team’s goal to have a complete book of work 3 years prior to the due date.

Qualifications-
Minimum:

  • BS Engineering
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience
  • Must be willing to travel up to 30% within PG&E’s service territory
  • Required to have a valid California driver's license on day one of employment.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of 49 CFR 192
  • Knowledge of natural gas operations
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and tasks occurring simultaneously
  • Ability to review large amounts of data in Excel
  • Gas field or construction experience
  • Gas Engineering & design experience
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, including both the office and field
