Job Description

Exelixis has newly formed the Digital Transformation (DT) function to effectively support Exelixis’ rapid growth which is expected in the next 3 to 5 years. To support business functions in process simplification, automation and data-driven decision making, DT is introducing relevant technology products. DT products will aid in sustaining both organic and inorganic growth of Exelixis, increasing operational complexity of additional product launches, indications, capabilities, and geographies.

The Sr Architect – Commercial & Medical will be part of the Architecture function within the Digital Transformation department. The Architecture group within DT functions like an internal consulting group and is responsible to develop and maintain architecture blueprints, roadmaps at the enterprise level for all the business functions by leveraging enterprise architecture tools, technologies, and methodologies.

The Sr Architect – Commercial & Medical is accountable for developing business-enabling technology solutions by simplifying the business processes, enhance digital dexterity of the functions, including analytics, that support Commercial and Medical specific capabilities and needs. This role applies enterprise architecture and business solution architecture approach and methodology for capturing the key views of the business unit, within the context of the enterprise. Maintains expertise in the direction of the business functions to identify challenges and associated plans to advance business capabilities. Effective partnership and teamwork with business partners, solution delivery managers, project managers and business analysts are critical to succeed in this role.



Business Knowledge/Business Relationship/Business Process mapping/Application Architecture

  • Cultivates and demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of Commercial and Medical business capabilities.
  • Participates in short- and long-term strategic planning sessions to improve business processes

Business Analysis

  • Develop deep and broad understanding of commercial and medical business functions
  • Ensure effective business analysis and requirements planning for functions like Sales, Marketing, Market Access, Sales Analytics, Patient Data Management.
  • Ensure effective consultation with Commercial and Medical business partners in exploring and applying innovative outside-in solution ideas to address business opportunities and challenges
  • Perform matrix leadership and hold accountability for business gap analysis, process mapping and requirement gathering and definition

Domain Architecture and Design

  • Ensure the proper architecture and design of business-enabling solutions that are consistent with the DT/IT standards, principles, and design guidelines
  • Partner with other technology leaders to identify potential shared platform solutions that can be leveraged across other business areas to minimize technology footprint
  • Contributes to enterprise architecture by conceptualizing solution architectures adhering to Architecture Directions and Standards while addressing business strategies, business capability requirements, business processes.
  • Contributes to enterprise architecture by modeling and mapping business processes, capabilities, and enterprise information
  • Designs and conducts pilots and POCs to demonstrate innovative solutions in the commercial and medical IT areas
  • Build and maintain an integrated view of the system landscape to support business needs

Solution Development and Support

  • Drive the evaluation of “ideas” to bring tangible, actionable solutions
  • Solve for business capability gaps, support development of business cases and weave solution execution plans into technology roadmaps, with appropriate linkages to other/related systems and areas

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Leads or manages the work of others by providing guidance to subordinates or teams based on organizational goals and company policy, with responsibility for results, including costs, methods and staffing.



  • BS/BA degree in related discipline and 10+ years of related experience; or,
  • MS/MBA degree in related discipline and 8+ years of related experience; or,
  • PhD in related discipline and 5+ years of related experience, or
  • Equivalent combination of talent, education, and experience.


  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an IT Architecture, Business Consulting OR Account Management role in the Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry, with a focus in Commercial and Medical functions
  • Minimum 5 years of experience at the intersection of strategy, architecture, and innovation, applying advanced technologies to large and/or complex business problems
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience working as a Business Solution Architect in the Pharmaceutical industry, soliciting, and defining requirements and business capabilities, and conducting process mapping
  • Experience with business and information architecture and at good understanding of other domains like application, integration, and infrastructure architecture.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with technology strategy, architecture & design with product-based approach
  • Experience with Agile, Scrum methodologies and DevOps methodologies with ability to leverage hybrid and cloud native solutions.
  • Hands on experience in working on platform architecture on Commercial & Medical technologies like Veeva, Sales Force, AWS based architecture.
  • Ability to translate business capabilities / process flow into a technical blueprint.
  • Experience in management consulting firms with focus on biotech industry is preferred.
  • Experience working on various Commercial and Medical functions like Customer Relationship & Data Management, Field/Salesforce Operations, Market Analysis, Market Access, Brand Strategy, Multi-Channel Marketing, Consent Management, Sales Analytics & Decision Support, Competitive Intelligence, Incentive Compensation, Patient Access, Partner & Vendor Management.
  • Experience in GxP regulated industries, Biotech/Pharma is preferred.


  • Working knowledge of various solution delivery methodologies – waterfall, agile, hybrid methods, etc.
  • Working knowledge of applied IT architecture in the effective design of business-enabling solutions.
  • Good understanding of IT governance, inspection, and regulatory requirements for validated systems.
  • In-depth understanding of all aspects of IT architecture with focus on Commercial and Medical.
  • Ability to influence business stakeholders towards industry standard and enterprise solutions.
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment with evolving operating model.
  • Independent, self-motivated, self-managing, proactive and responsive with a bias for action and results.
  • Deep understanding of data engineering, data governance and data management areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate with business in launching technologies to support drug launches, deliver large, complex, programs involving system and process reengineering and integration.
  • Ability to collaborate with senior functional leaders to set vision, drive innovation and facilitate transformation to meet evolving business needs and priorities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail and business communication skills.
