Position Summary

The Senior Software Engineer develops and leads the next-generation technologies that change how thousands of students complete continued education online. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to WGU’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our Senior Engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities, and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of Java and JVM based technologies

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, document, and improve software

  • Manage individual project priorities, deadlines and deliverables

  • Focus on overall product quality and student experience

  • Take initiative and be responsible for technical solutions to data quality and workflow challenges

  • Analyzes software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints

  • Inspire, develop, and mentor team members

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5 years of software development experience, or 3 years with an advanced degree

  • Experience in Java, Kotlin, Python, JavaScript, or Go

  • Experience in any of the following: Unix/Linux environments, distributed/parallel systems, information retrieval, networking, systems/security software development, event driven architecture

  • Experience working with AWS services (S3, CloudFormation, DynamoDB, EC2, Kinesis, SQS, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree, further education or experience in engineering, computer science or another technical related field

  • Experience developing accessible technologies

  • Interest and ability to learn other coding languages as needed

  • Ability to write in English fluently and idiomatically

  • Desire to progress personal skill set in order to achieve career progression

This position will close internally on 7/8/21.
