The Human Resource Generalist will run the daily functions of the HR department including onboarding staff, administering pay, benefits, and leave, and enforcing company policies and practices

Human Resources functions:

  • Coordinate and assist with the new hire process, including assisting and ensuring new hires properly complete the on-boarding process, submit and process paperwork to appropriate departments, create new employee files, coordinate orientation and support training efforts
  • Manage sensitive and confidential matters, including collecting new hire paperwork, maintenance of I-9 forms, and updating employee files and records
  • Conduct or acquire background checks and employment eligibility verifications
  • Respond to inquiries from employees and external parties; process employment information/verification requests consistent with agency policies and confidentiality requirements
  • Administer healthcare plans and wellness programs, from medical and dental benefits to disability and family leave
  • Coordinate non-salary employee compensation (e.g., retirement plans, stock options, other)
  • Process various paperwork, regarding disability, FMLA absences, employee life status changes, and immigration programs
  • Act as a liaison between the organization and external benefits providers and vendors, which may include health, disability, and retirement plan providers
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance
  • Recruit, interview, and facilitate the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborate with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings
  • Perform periodic audits of HR files and records to ensure that all required documents are collected and filed appropriately

Payroll functions:

  • Update employee records in HRIS programs as necessary
  • Prepare and process semi-monthly and off-cycle payroll
  • Manage payroll deductions via payroll providers including medical, FSA, 401(K), and other legally mandated payroll deductions (such as garnishments)
  • Confirm accuracy of employee time off records (sick & vacation) for posting on Payroll stubs.
  • Assist in month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Accounting, or Business Administration preferred
  • Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel)
  • Familiarity with HRIS and payroll software (Bamboo HR and ADP Workforce Now preferred)
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • 3+ years experience in human resources management and payroll
  • Experience working in a life-sciences start-up a plus
